Introduction
The history of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in National Cheng Kung University could be traced to the former Department of Electrochemistry founded in 1947. It was changed to the Department of Mining, Metallurgy, and Materials Science in the autumn of 1969. In the fall of 1974, it was split into two divisions, the Department of Metallurgy & Materials Engineering and the Department of Minerals & Petroleum Engineering. The Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering was further evolved into the Department of Materials Engineering in 1986, and then renamed and settled as the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 1992. Along with these changes, the Department, which offers high quality education and conducts high profile research activities, has become one of the best of its kind in Taiwan.
